Standardized as IEEE 802.3, the Ethernet protocol is used for local area networks (LANs) at the Layer 1 (Physical Layer) and Layer 2 (Data Link Layer) of the OSI networking model. Ethernet can be used to connect twisted copper pair networks and to connect fiber optic cable networks. It also provides a great local access medum to connect LANs to the Internet.
